You have made the first step
toward finding what you need from the "net" simply by signing onto
it. Now, how do you get the information you seek? Although there are many methods
available, including books and magazines the dynamics of the internet are constantly
changing as are the websites. So what are you to do? There are several excellent
search tools available to all users, following are a few of them.
Aliweb Search Site
is offered by NEXOR. A slick form allowing the user to submit their search with multiple
degrees of specificity.
All4Oneis one of several sites that searches the 'Net utilizing multiple search engines.
All4One utilizes AltaVista, Lycos, WebCrawler, and Yahoo. Obviously, the power of four may
well offer the searcher more than any one of them alone.
Alta Vistacreated by Digital is quite
incredible. Still one of my favorite search tools with extensive on-line documentation
available for both the beginning and advanced user. Try it...you will like it! Psssst, I
have added their basic direct search link below which you can see if your browser allows
for forms to be displayed.
The Awesome Listshomepage
offers links to many general sites throughout the internet.
CUSI Search Siteis one of my
favorite "select from the list" search sites. It is located in the UK and the
distance may slow down your search but I have not seen that occur. It is simple,
comprehensive, and effective. Give this site a try when all your favorites lead you
astray, CUSI's tool may bring you home.
EINet
Galaxy Search Siteis a guide to worldwide information and services and is provided
as a public service by TradeWave Corporation.
Excitewas rated as "PC Magazine Editors' Choice" among the top search engines in
their December 3, 1996 issue. Worth a visit, it may become your favorite site too.
Geneva's CUI W3Catalog offers a
comprehensive list of search engines to select from. Not a search engine itself but links
to many available out there. Maintained by the University of Geneva, Switzerland.
HotBotoffers several advanced search options. If your search statement needs refinement this
site allows you to "modify" your search with the click of a button. Nice spot to
add to your bookmark file!
Infoseek
maintains a couple of million links within its database. Allows for sorting by Infoseek
category.
iToolsoffers resources for searching the Internet, verifying your spelling, reviewing stock
quotes, and much more. Through this site you will find "Find-It!",
"Research-It!", and "Promote-It".
Lycos
Search Sitehas really done some wonderful things lately! Now you can actually find
a map to almost anywhere in the United States as well as the general search engine related
benefits associated with the site. Stop by Lycos if you haven't been there for a while.
Psssst, I have added their advanced search link below which you can see if your browser
allows for forms to be displayed.

Magellan,

MetaCrawler
is one of the newer multiple-search-engine search engines. Your search of the web is done
through nine different search engines all at once. If one is good then just think of the
power of nine!
Open
Text Indexis another site to visit which allows for searching to take place.
Point
Communications CorporationOffers "The Top Sites of the WEB" and gives
the user free choice of text, normal graphic, or enhanced graphical mode. Several sites
now post if they are found on this list so my guess is that its importance on the WEB will
grow. It allows for your input to be given regarding HOT sites you find too. Psssst, I
have added their basic direct search link below which you can see if your browser allows
for forms to be displayed.
Search.Comis presented by c|net. This search tool allows the user to select from many search
engines found on the Web. If you can't find what you want here then it is quite possible
that it just isn't out there.
WebCrawler
Search Siteis not the largest but has been out there for a while and is often
worth your time.
GoTo.com
is one of the first sites that was developed and made available on the Web.
Originally known as the World Wide Web Worm now called GoTo.com.
Yahoo
Search Siteis last ONLY because I have sorted the listing alphabetically. Yahoo
still maintains an excellent selection of sites and is probably the most respected of the
search tools available. Although it does not maintain as many indexed URLs as some of the
other engines listed it does assist the seeker to sort the wheat from the chaff.
